In an interview with Giuseppe Strappa, Jeremy
Whitehand explains his ideas on the study of the
historical city from the point of view of the method
used by M.R.G. Conzen and continued by the
English Historical Geographical School.
The topics are:
– the question of the generalization of the study
methods used and the field of validity in different
cultural contexts;
– how individual building could be investigated
inside a wider historical landscape and how urban
morphology could contribute to guiding
change;
– the problem of the ancient patterns underlying
the form of actual cities, which should correctly
be posed as interdisciplinary but in fact
has rarely led to collaboration between different
disciplines;
– the impact of the modern retail structures
in the transformation of historic centres.
